Andrew June Bug Denson Jr
11/16/1965 - 2/13/2014

Andrew “June Bug” Denson Jr., was born November 16, 1965 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He departed this life on February 13, 2014. 

He attended St. Joseph Catholic School.  He later attended St. Agnes Catholic Church and served as an altar boy.  He was baptized on March 24, 1972 and confirmed by Archbishop Bernardin on March 24, 1979.  He reaffirmed his faith and was baptized again at New Life Temple in 1992.

 

He attended Purcell Marian High School. He was a three year varsity letterman and team captain in basketball; one of the best players in the school’s history. He earned 1st team Honors from the Greater Catholic League (GCL), the Post and the Enquirer his junior and senior year.   Drew played first base, outfield, pitched and was a switch hitter for the Purcell Marian Cavalier’s. He was a 3-year starter, and earned 1st team GCL honors every year. During his senior year he had a batting average of .545, 35 hits, and 5 home runs.  He earned AAA Player of the Year in 1984.  On April 9, 1984, Drew hit a home run against Roger Bacon, which some say measured between 437 feet to 600 feet over several houses. Drew was inducted into the Cavalier’s Athletic Hall of Fame (Purcell Marian) on January 25, 2000.

 

Drew was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round (19th pick) of the1984 amateur draft.  His Major League Baseball debut came in 1989 against the San Diego Padres.  He later signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox in 1992.  Drew retired from baseball in 1996. 

 

He became a Cincinnati Police Officer on December 10, 1999 and worked in District 4. He served for ten years and retired in 2009. 

 

Andrew Denson Jr. leaves to cherish his memories:  LaTonya, wife of 19 years, one son, Andre’ Marquise, parents, Andrew Sr. and Ollie; two sisters, Cynthia (Frederick) Borden, Jacqueline Bell; two brothers, Anthony and Jeffery; great-great Aunt, Catherine Jenkins, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  His giving spirit will live in us forever.

 

Service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Zion Global Ministries; 9180 Cincinnati-Columbus Road, West Chester, OH 45069, Freddie T Piphus, Pastor.  Visitation - 12 noon, Service – 1:00 pm
